tobacco risks, social and health risks.

Fact: Tobacco Kills you slowly

Medical fact: people die from coranary heart disease and lung cancer because of tobacco

Tobacco reduces a person's ability to taste and smell.

As tobacco reduces the amount of oxygen to the brain and muscles, it is responsable for headaches, "veriges", and diminishes exercise endurance.

long-term smoking can lead to fatal heart attacks, strokes, emphysema, and cancer.

Coronary linked problems

  • Nicotine increases heart rate & blood pressure. (Heart rate can rise by 30% in first 10 min of smoking.)
  • Carbon monoxide is present in blood reducing the amount of oxygen in blood. Because of the reduced amount of oxygen in blood, the heart can’t work properly.
    • Good HDL cholesterol reduced & bad cholesterol increased creating plaque formation in blood vessels. So blood vessels narrow & less O2 reaches heart, making it work harder.
    • The blood tendency to clot is increased. These blood clots can block blood flow causing gangrene, strokes, and heart attacks.
    • ie. if flow in coronary vessel gets blocked, part of the heart dies, it’s a heart attack. If the blockage is extensive, the whole heart is damaged & stops pumping resulting in death.

Lungs linked problems

  • The lungs get damaged too:
    • The toxic gases damage cilia (little hairs that line the airways filter and remove dirt).
    • Tar builds up at branching points.
    • Smoke fills air sacs, damages them, then the blood absorbs substances in the smoke & distributes them throughout the body.
